Francesco Canzonieri has over 20 years of experience in Investment Banking, gained both in Italy and abroad. At the age of 39, he was appointed Global Co-Head of Corporate & Investment Banking of Mediobanca. On February 12, 2021, he established Nextalia SGR S.p.A. together with leading Italian institutional investors (Intesa Sanpaolo, UnipolSai Assicurazioni, Coldiretti and Micheli Associati).
He joined Mediobanca in 2014 as Global Head of FIG, later becoming Global Head of Corporate Finance and Italy Country Head, and finally Global Co-Head of Corporate & Investment Banking in 2018. In Mediobanca, he was involved in some of the most transformational M&A deals in the Italian market, including Intesa Sanpaolo’s tender offer on UBI Banca, the restructuring of Esselunga, the merger of Vodafone Tower Italia into INWIT and Prysmian’s acquisition of General Cable. Furthermore, he actively participated in all recent major banking transactions and in the transformational and consolidation process of NEXI, from the sale of ICBPI, its listing, and up to the latest M&A transactions (i.e. NETS and SIA).
Previously, he was Head of FIG for Italy, Greece, Turkey and CEE & CIS at Barclays, where he was involved in all major restructurings, mergers and capital increases in the Italian and Greek banking and insurance system. He started his career at Goldman Sachs in London in the Italian M&A team, working on, among others, the Olivetti / Telecom Italia merger, the Autostrade tender offer and the ETI privatization.
Over the course of his career, he received numerous recognitions, including the Professional of the Year – M&A award for three consecutive years (2018 to 2020) and the Deal of the Year – M&A (2019 and 2020) award from Financecommunity, which has also ranked him #3 in its 2020 Top 50 Finance Professionals in Italy. On April 23, 2021, he received the “San Giorgio d’Oro” award, the highest civilian recognition awarded by his hometown, Reggio Calabria.
He holds a degree in Business Administration from Bocconi University in Milan and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.
